If a person is disabled or is likely to be disabled for a year or longer, he/she may be entitled to Social Security Disability
(SSD) benefits provided that the worker has made sufficient payments into his/her Social Security account.  To obtain
SSD benefits, the disabled person must show that he/she is disabled from all gainful employment activity.  An SSD
award entitles the worker to obtain his/her Social Security benefits earlier than retirement age because of disability.

Unlike Social Security Disability (SSD), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are paid to individuals who are poor
and disabled.  Because SSI is a need-based benefits program, the financial eligibility of SSI claimants is evaluated
based on income and resources.

Social Security Disability claims are administered by the Social Security Administration and often require hearings
before Social Security Administrative Law Judges.
